Alternative from Microsoft Windows to Linux
You heard Apple Macintosh Computers running Intel processors powered by Linux (FreeBSD). . . Today I found something more interesting – Gaming – True games like World of Warcraft, EVE Online, Guild Wars, even The Sims running on Linux successfully.
The software entitled Cedega (by TransGaming formally WineX) “… brings the thrill of blockbuster video gaming to the Linux operating system… enables Linux games to play Microsoft Windows titles on their Linux OS of choice…” I found this interesting in contract to Wine HQ and the operating system Apple Macintosh.
Well let’s stop for a second and define what all this means. First off, Wine HQ and Cedega are software packages which bridge the gap between Windows to another operating system simply. The difference between Wine and Cedega is that Wine is more geared between general Windows applications running on Linux whereas Cedega is more video games related.
Okay, so we understand that there are different programs out there which are not dependable by Microsoft. What about operating systems – you mentioned Linux but does that mean this can work on Macintosh computers and what about Linspire (formally Lindowes)?
This is where my head exploded! Today we see it all powered by Linux… for example Linksys (bought out by Cisco), Novel, MSN/Hotmail, and Microsoft’s TiVo are all powered by Linux variants which means to answer your questions yes, yes and yes! Yes I mean Microsoft is hurting (my opinion) all this open software biting Mr. Bill Gates in the nuts. . . I believe it is truly possible we will be seeing more Linux power to the end user even bigger than before.
If you can play World of Warcraft, or other games, read and write documents in Microsoft Word – better yet OpenOffice (a word processor alternative for Linux), play music, play videos all like Windows – why use Windows in the first place?!
Industry standard perhaps?! Bah! Does it really matter?! What about the costs? You should already know the alternative using Linux (simply) is less expensive than Windows. . .
In the end, although Linux does not natively support everything in today’s market applications it’s truly the value and its costs which are the bottom line in determining the factor of how you use your computer.
With my experience and working with services of computer repair I use both Windows and Linux in my daily routines. Typically using Windows for the latest edge software not natively supported by Linux quite yet (like Office 2007 and Vista). Otherwise, I own more Linux computers than Windows in my home-office powering my Internet, firewall, file server, bridge, QoS, Email, FTP, and more.
Non-subjectively speaking I truly believe the Linux desktop environments will soon come to all end users – throw away Gate’s trashy Windows with Activation this and Phone home that.
