Application Error - Floating point!

Symptom:
After using explorer to copy, and move files I recently encountered this error message:

Window  Name:  explorer.exe  -  Application  Error
The  exception  Floating-point  inexact  result.
(0xc000008f)  occurred  in  the  application  at  location  0×7c812a5b.

Click on  OK  to terminate  the  program

Update:
It seems explorer.exe isn’t the only application experiencing the same problem. I receive the same error message in Cool Edit Pro 1.2 this time the error code is 0×0000090 at location 0×0052ce21.
